Nuno Borges’s Story
Nuno received one year of funding (£70,000) while he applied to Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council for a PhD fellowship. With a great deal of persistence he made it, receiving £223,309 from the Medical Research Council for the second and third years of his PhD.
His project aims to show how a blood test can predict remission and survival in patients with acute myeloid leukaemia, reducing the need for bone marrow tests. More recently, Bright Red has contributed an additional £6,000 to support the generation of pilot data in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
Thanks to this experience, Nuno has been selected as a trainee member of the UK AML Research Network and as a DIDACT fellow. He has also contributed to the international haematology field through the European Hematology Association, as Chair of its YoungEHA committee.
Bright Red’s support has been instrumental in allowing Nuno to start his PhD and develop his research interests in acute myeloid leukaemia.
